Láchar – Tobacco Barns
FILM IN GRANADA HELPS YOU MANAGE YOUR FILMING PROJECTS IN OUR PROVINCE
Peñuelas is a population center belonging to the municipality of Láchar, located in the western part of the Vega of Granada. Nearby are the villages of Trasmulas, Fuensanta, Cijuela and Castillo de Tajarja. It was created by the National Institute of Colonization, at the beginning of the decade of the 60s. Originally, the Institute distributed to each family a house and a piece of irrigated land.
The historic center of Peñuelas is structured in wide and straight streets. The parish church of San Pío X, built in 1959, has the tallest tower in the area (22 m.) that contrasts with the surrounding buildings. The tower is located at some distance from the body of the church, built in the modernist style.
It also highlights the development of old tobacco barns, a fundamental crop in the first decades of the town’s history, which was later replaced by other horticultural products.
