Ventas de Zafarraya is an independent local entity in the province of Granada. It borders the municipality of Zafarraya in Granada and the municipalities of Periana and Alcaucín in Málaga.

The Boquete de Zafarraya is a unique geological formation, a natural passage between the provinces of Granada and Málaga, fitted between two imposing limestone cliffs, being one of them, known as Tajo de la U, the most emblematic for being in it the Boquete de Zafarraya Cave.

This place is an important site worldwide since two relevant Neanderthal fossils were found, among others, one of them known as the “Man of Zafarraya”. The first settlers of Llano de Zafarraya date back to the Middle Paleolithic, when man inhabited the Zafarraya Boquete’s Cave. During the twentieth century it sheltered a section of the Málaga Suburban Railways until its only station in the province of Granada, in this locality.

The village of Ventas de Zafarraya keeps this spectacular natural monument located in the surroundings of the Natural Park of the Sierras de Tejeda, Almijara and Alhama and the polje of the Llano of Zafarraya. Natural balcony to the Axarquia of Malaga. From this privileged viewpoint you can glimpse the sea while enjoying the air of the mountains.
