Chauchina is located in the western part of the region of the Vega of Granada. It borders the municipalities of Cijuela, Fuente Vaqueros, Santa Fe and Chimeneas. Its name comes from the Latin Sancius, and this in turn from the word salix, which means “willow”. In Arabic times it was transcribed as Yayyaâna. Its municipal district includes a large part of the airport of Granada and also the Genil River flows through it.

The Soto de Roma Tower is a defensive bastion of the Nasrid period and is listed as an Asset of Cultural Interest. The construction dates from between the 13th and 14th centuries. In 1431, it appears for the first time mentioned in the chronicles of the Christian reconquest, which describe the raids by Alvaro de Luna and Miguel Lucas Iranzo in the vega of Granada. The Catholic Kings took the tower before the fall of Boabdil, the last Nasrid sultan.
