Cájar

C/ Colón, 5

On the occasion of the 450th anniversary of the Apeo del Lugar de Cáxar de la Vega, the Silk Interpretation Centre will open to the public on 3 March 2022. This museum project aims to enrich and revitalise the municipality based on the element linked to the origin and history of Cájar, such as silk.

This Centre aims to become a tourist resource for the town with the possibility of becoming a major attraction for the whole of Andalusia, as it is one of the first spaces dedicated to the silk industry in Andalusia.

The exhibition space is very characteristic and unique. It was built by Enrique Tabourot Aupede, a French-Swiss man who settled in Granada in 1940 and came to Cájar with the idea of creating a business related to the cultivation of mushrooms.

Despite selling fabrics, lace, engraving fountain pens and jewellery, he was the pioneer in introducing the mushroom into the gastronomy of Granada, finding in the upper part of the municipality, in Bellavista, the ideal place to build a network of underground galleries for its cultivation.

After the boom in canned products, the cave ceased to be exploited and was completely abandoned. Years later, the Town Council of Cájar acquired the cave in order to refurbish and restore it, as part of the Programme for the Promotion of Agricultural Employment with the participation of the State, the Andalusian Regional Government and the Provincial Council of Granada.
