Campus Universitario de Cartuja, s/n 18071 - Granada

The Faculty of Arts is one of the most emblematic centers of the University of Granada and is located in the University Campus of Cartuja, one of the most important areas of the University of Granada.

The building that today houses the Faculty of Arts is the result of a project by Francisco Prieto Moreno, who designed it in 1971 to accommodate the increasing number of students attending the University of Granada since the sixties. Its structure and materials are the result of the trend that was already being developed when planning different university campuses nationwide, making use of exposed concrete, alternating it with large glass surfaces.

The floor plan, designed on piles to bridge the differences in level caused by its location on the side of a hill, is composed of a large central corridor on the sides of which are distributed large classroom modules. The concrete, showing the marks of the formwork, is the undisputed protagonist in the construction, generating vertical pillars-parasol perpendicular to the plane of the facades and marking the exterior appearance on each of its faces. Likewise, this material appears practically naked in the interior, forming coffers in the ceiling and conferring a simple and practical image.

The landscaped space that precedes the main façade and the small gardens located between modules are also the result of Prieto Moreno’s design, but not the new extensions that have been carried out since the 1980s with the creation of the building known as Building B and the successive expansions of spaces such as the library, as well as the most recent one, carried out on the parking area to house a new module of offices, classrooms and new study rooms.
