Fondales is one of the villages that make up the municipality of La Taha, in the heart of Granada’s Alpujarra region. Located in the lowest part of the municipality and away from the main road, it has preserved its traditional Alpujarran architecture almost intact and forms part of the Historic Site of the Alpujarra Media Granadina and La Tahá, designated as a Site of Cultural Interest.

Its urban layout is characterised by narrow, winding and sloping streets, lined with numerous tinaos — traditional covered passageways — and porches. Some of these spaces are particularly decorated with plants, paintings and other ornamental elements placed by local residents. The village also preserves fountains, old communal washhouses, threshing floors and a small stone chapel dedicated to Our Lady of the Rosary.

Fondales is nestled in a landscape of ravines, terraced farmland and mountains, close to the Trevélez River. Its surroundings preserve old paths and historic features such as Fondales Bridge, a mill associated with the river and the medieval cisterns in the Campuzano area.
