Dúrcal – Bridge

The Iron Bridge of Dúrcal, popularly known as the ‘Puente de Lata’, was installed in this village in 1924 and has just celebrated its first centenary.

The bridge was built in the early 20th century to span the Arroyo de Gor (in the north of the province of Granada), where it was used to cover the Guadix-Baza railway line. Although the design of the bridge, like the Puente del Hacho (Guadahortuna), is attributed to the studio of Gustave Eiffel, it is more likely that the engineer James Livesey was responsible for it in 1890.

Following a landslide that forced the Guadix-Baza railway line to be rectified, the bridge fell into disuse and was acquired years later by the company Tranvías Eléctricos de Granada S.A., which moved it to its current location to serve the extension of the Granada-Alhendín electric railway to Dúrcal. The bridge was inaugurated on 18th July 1924 and from then until 1974 the trams of this line passed over it.

The General Director of Fine Arts of Granada, Vicente González Barberán, managed in 1983 that the bridge was ceded to the Diputación Provincial de Granada for its conservation and nowadays it is property of the Town Hall of Dúrcal. Since then it has been used exclusively by pedestrians and from it you can enjoy an excellent panoramic view over the valley of the River Dúrcal.
