«La Voz Quebrada» will be screened at the 74th San Sebastián Film Festival

«La Voz Quebrada», the documentary film by Manuel Menchón («Words for an End of the World»), will be screened on 24 September at the 74th San Sebastián International Film Festival, as part of the RTVE Galas. The film will be released in Spanish cinemas on 16 October, distributed by Sideral.

‘La Voz Quebrada’ (2026)

As the 90th anniversary of the murder of Federico García Lorca is commemorated, «La Voz Quebrada» will arrive at the San Sebastián International Film Festival to reveal for the first time an unknown part of the poet and playwright’s life, thanks to previously unseen materials preserved for decades by Juan Ramírez de Lucas, considered by researchers to have been his last love.

One of the film’s major discoveries is the access to the notebooks, letters, photographs and personal materials that Juan Ramírez de Lucas kept throughout his life. Their historical importance led the Spanish Congress of Deputies to unanimously approve an initiative in 2012 to ensure their preservation and make them available to the public. However, that decision was never implemented, and these documents remained unseen until their inclusion in «La Voz Quebrada», where they are shown to the general public for the first time.

In the summer of 1936, Federico García Lorca and the young Juan Ramírez de Lucas were planning to leave Spain and start a new life away from a society that forced them to keep their relationship secret. That journey never took place. Weeks later, Lorca was murdered in Granada, at the beginning of the Spanish Civil War.

«La Voz Quebrada» revisits this unfinished story and explores the more intimate side of the poet and playwright through the relationship that marked the final months of his life. To give a voice back to its protagonists, the film features an distinguished cast led by Álvaro Morte as Federico García Lorca, alongside Francesco Carril, Joaquín Notario, Pedro Casablanc, Verónica Sánchez, Víctor Clavijo, María Galiana and Alberto San Juan.

The film’s participation in the San Sebastián International Film Festival continues Granada’s presence at the festival over its last five editions, which have featured productions filmed in the province and supported by Film in Granada, including «Tobacco Barns» by Rocío Mesa in 2022; «Close your eyes» by Víctor Erice and «Society of the Snow» by J. A. Bayona in 2023; and «Saturn Return» by Isaki Lacuesta and Pol Rodríguez in 2024.

Film in Granada’s support for «La Voz Quebrada» dates back to the project’s pre-production stage in March 2022. Since then, the provincial office for cinema and filming promotion has collaborated in location scouting and the management of filming permits. The film has also received financial support from the Diputación de Granada through its annual funding programme for film projects.

This collaboration continued in November 2025, when director and screenwriter Manuel Menchón and executive producer Fernando Bassi took part in the V Jornada de Industria Audiovisual “Rodar en Granada”, organised by Film in Granada at the Palacio de los Condes de Gabia. During the event, they presented «La Voz Quebrada: Lorca’s Film Archive», an interesnting talk about the extensive and detailed research and documentation carried out for the production of the documentary feature film, which includes previously unseen footage of Lorca.

«La Voz Quebrada» joins the list of films that have used locations in the province of Granada to tell their stories. Supported by Film in Granada since its early stages, the project now begins its distribution journey at one of the leading showcases for international cinema, helping to strengthen Granada’s growing presence in the film industry in recent years.
