Bérchules – Viewpoint

Bérchules is a town in the Alpujarra of Granada, nestled on the southern slopes of the Sierra Nevada Natural Park, in the high mountains, between beautiful landscapes and sources of ferruginous and carbonated waters. Its white houses with flat roofs and its staggered streets, perfectly adapted to the broken terrain make up the typical architecture of the Alpujarra.

A singularity of Bérchules that deserves to be highlighted is that it celebrates New Year’s Eve in August. This fact is due to the fact that a recent December 31 there was a power outage in the village depriving the neighbors to follow the twelve bells and say goodbye to the year. The berchuleros then decided to eat their grapes in the middle of the summer.

Generally, the “eras” are circular and paved surfaces that are located in areas exposed to the wind. In them, farmers performed two fundamental tasks: the “threshing” and the “winnowing” by means of which, they managed to separate the grain from its envelope for its later use. The decline of agriculture in the Alpujarra, has determined that many of these threshing floors have fallen into disuse and are in a poor state of preservation.
