Almuñécar – Castle

Almuñécar is one of the most important archaeo-tourist destinations in Andalusia, where every corner contains the remains of the ancient history of the city. Its coastline is known by the brand name of Costa Tropical, a name in keeping with its extensive beaches, its climatic conditions and its exuberant tropical and subtropical vegetation. A unique combination in the Iberian Peninsula, as well as in the whole European continent.

Situated on the “Cerro de San Miguel” and crowning the town, this fortress occupies the space that Phoenicians and Romans used, as can be seen from different sources and building structures. The structures of the castle doubtless date back to the Muslim period, as it became the resting place of the Nasrid dynasty around the 13th century. At the end of the reign of the Catholic King Ferdinand, in the 16th century, was built the moat, the drawbridge and the imposing entrance façade with its four circular towers. During the War of Independence against the French soldiers, it was bombarded by English troops and was left in a ruinous state, being used as a Christian cemetery until the middle of the 20th century.
