The Faculty of Sciences of the University of Granada is located on the Fuentenueva University Campus and was designed by Cruz López Müller and directed by the architect Alberto López Palanco, with construction beginning in 1963.

López Müller’s idea was based on functionality, designing a light and open building that would allow a dialogue between the interior and the exterior, an area dominated by landscaped space. Thus, a neo-rationalist construction is proposed, organized around a central spine in a north-south direction, with departmental wings in east-west sections in the form of pavilions or blocks linked to each other by courtyards.

When conceiving the general structure, the architect anticipates the future needs of the building, providing highly flexible solutions for the interior and exterior for future extensions, distributing the spaces by means of easily modifiable partitioning. The elevation is predominantly horizontal, a fact that is accentuated by the use of continuous windows combined with solid brick walls, plastered and treated with white plastic paint.

Highlights include the Main Hall, made of poplar wood pyramids, which houses a mural by the sculptor Abelardo Herrero and a helical staircase to the upper Hall, as well as the Aula Magna, an impressive auditorium with capacity for 500 people.
